Pinellas County Pet Friendly Hurricane Shelters

By lipply

Hurricane season started June 1. Being prepared for a hurricane is your best defense. While we don't anticipate being hit by a hurricane this year, know what to do with your pet is so important because so many people have pets and they depend on us for their safety. In the event of a hurricane, pet owners need to be aware that there are only a few shelters that take pets. Pre-registration is required.

There are two shelters registered so far this year:

Dunedin Middle School, 70 Patricia Ave., Dunedin, FL

Oak Grove Middle School, 1370 S. Belcher Rd., Clearwater, FL

If you must evacuate, the first choice is to seek shelter with friends, family or a host home. Public shelters are a final option. While they are safe places to be in a storm, space and comforts are limited. You must check to be sure the shelter is open before you leave your home.

Check current Tampa Bay Weather Conditions here.

NOTE: Dunedin Middle School and Oaks Grove Middle School are also special needs shelters. If you or a love one has a special need, medical or physical, you will want to consider one of these two shelters should you need to evacuate your home.
